China has lots of taboos, many of
which have something to do with words that sound similar in Mandarin. A prime
example is the word four, which sounds a lot like the one for death. Writing
someone’s name in red ink is also considered a taboo in China. 1、红色代表血,所以用那种颜色写别人的名字暗示对方可能不久会发生严重的意外。
Many of these taboos are
outdated, so Chinese people have come up with creative ways to bend the rules.
It was once taboo to give umbrellas as gifts because the Chinese word for
umbrella sounds very much like the one for separate. 2、如果有人碰巧这么做,受礼者可以用很少的金额买下雨伞以避免厄运。If you ever violate a taboo by
accident, just remember that a smile and a sincere apology can usually make the
situation better. |
