I. Translate the Following Passage into Chinese (50 Points):

Silent Spring

There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings. The town lay in the midst of prosperous farms, where, in spring, white clouds of bloom drifted above the green fields. In autumn, oak and maple and birch set up a blaze of color that flamed and flickered across a background of pines. Then foxes barked in the hills and deer silently crossed the fields. Even in winter the roadsides were places of beauty, where countless birds came to feed on the berries and on the seed heads of the dried weeds rising above the snow.

Then some evil spell settled on the community: mysterious diseases swept the flocks of chickens; the cattle and sheep sickened and died. In the town the doctors became more and more puzzled by new kinds of sickness appearing among their patients. There had been several sudden and unexplained deaths, not only among adults but even among children. There was a strange stillness. It was a spring without voices and sound; only silence lay over the fields, woods and marsh.

What happened? As a matter of fact, no witchcraft, no enemy action had silenced the rebirth of all life in this stricken world. It was the people who had done it themselves.

在美国的中部，曾经有一个小镇，那里所有的生命看起来都与周围的环境相处和谐。小镇四周是繁荣的农场，到了春天，盛开的花儿像白云一样摇曳在绿色的原野上；(或者：绿色的田野上繁花盛开似白云飘浮) 秋天，栎树、枫树和桦树层林尽染，五彩斑斓，在松林的映衬下，仿佛燃烧跃动的火苗。丘陵中传来狐啼阵阵，鹿群在田野间静悄悄地走过。即使在冬天，道路两旁依然随处可见美景，无数鸟儿飞来觅食浆果，寻觅枯草露出皑皑白雪的穗尖，啄食上面的草籽。

然而，灾难却如同魔咒一般降临到了这个小镇。神秘的疾病扫荡了所有的鸡群，牛羊病的病死的死。镇上的医生对患者中出现的各种新病症茫然无措。先后有几个人不明原因地暴亡（死得很突然，且原因不明），死者中有成年人，甚至还有儿童。小镇陷入一片异样的寂静。这是一个没有声音和响动（悄无声息）的春天。只有沉寂笼罩在田野、森林和沼泽之上。

这到底是怎么回事？事实上，不是魔法，也不是敌人的行动，压制了这个灾难世界里所有生命的再生，而是人们自己造成了这一切。

听英语新闻广播学英语

第一个月中，播出的每句话中都有我听不明白的词语。我就把这些听不明白的关键词语记录在本子上。等半个小时的新闻一播完，马上翻开手边的词典，把这些生疏的词语查一遍。等到晚上10时晚间听英语新闻重播的时候，竟然完全听明白了。经过半年持之以恒的磨练，我不仅可以摆脱词典听懂西方电台的英语新闻广播，而且还加深了自己对英语新闻的记忆和复述能力。当时，为了让更多地同学分享我的学习成果，我把收听记录的新闻摘要、新的词语解释等抄写在一张大纸上，贴在教室门外的墙上。

无论是我读大学的那个短波新闻时代，或是今天这样一个网络新闻和卫星电视新闻时代，在这样一个越来越媒介化的社会里，练好新闻英语的听说读写译，不仅是一个未来的新闻记者必须掌握的，更是学好英语的最有效的途径。

Learn English through English News Broadcast Listening

In the first month when I tried to learn English via News broadcast listening, there were words or expressions that I could not understand in almost every sentence broadcasted. I jotted them down in a notebook. After the half-an-hour news broadcast was over, I immediately opened the dictionary at hand and looked up those unfamiliar words and expressions. After half a year’s constant practice, not only could I understand the English news on western radio without consulting the dictionary, but also I enhanced my ability to memorize and paraphrase the news I heard. At that time, to share my achievements with more classmates, I copied the news briefs that I had noted down when listening as well as the meanings of new words on a large piece of paper, and posted it on the wall outside (of) the classroom.

Either in the days of short-wave news when I was in college, or in today’s era when people receive news from the internet or satellite TV, in such a society where the media play an increasingly important role, a good training in listening, speaking, reading and translating of English news is a must for future journalists. At the same time, going through such training is a most effective approach in learning English well.
