Du Fu

The sound of fifth watch like an arrow heralds the morning soon,

In the spring Forbidden City fairy peach trees are in full bloom.

The shadows of flags resembling snakes and dragons in breeze gently move,

Swallows and sparrows on a warm day chant high above many a palace roof.

After the levee, with two sleeves smoke-scented,

You wield your brush, and rare verses are composed.

Once your father was Emperor’s favourite secretary, everyone knows,

Today on the Phoenix Pool, an unparalleled talent brightly grows.
