Been in the army ten years and more,

not a single medal to show for it!

Others know how to talk up their exploits—

I could talk too, but I’m ashamed to sound like them!

Fighting on China’s central plain,

on top of that, wars with border tribes.

But a brave man faces in all four directions—

how can he beg out when times get hard?
