If
for fun I behaved as a sycophant to please the world, My
body and soul would suffer, and all in vain. These
years I’ve let others hurl invectives at me, But
an unconventional old one I’ll remain.

In his old age the author lived by present-day Longtan Lake of Macheng, Hubei
Province. The lake is referred to in this poem as Shitan.
