Ministry Spokesperson Qin Gang’s Regular Press Conference on December 19, 2014
Q: President Barack
Obama has signed into law the US Congress act authorizing President’s sale of “Perry-class”
missile frigates to Taiwan. What is China’s comment on that?
A: The Taiwan Question
concerns China’s core interests and remains the most important and sensitive
issue in China-US relations. The Chinese side is firmly opposed to the arms
sales by the US to Taiwan. This position is steadfast, clear and consistent.
The aforementioned act constitutes a grave breach of the spirit of the three
joint communiqués between China and the US, especially that of the August 17
Communiqué, brutally interferes in China’s domestic affairs and undermines
China’s sovereignty and security interests. It goes against the trend of
peaceful development of the cross-Straits relations. The Chinese side is
strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposed to that. We have lodged solemn
representations with the American side in both Beijing and Washington, and we
reserve the right of taking further actions.
We urge the American side to
adhere to the one China policy and principles enshrined in the three joint
communiqués between China and the US, stop official interactions and military
exchanges with Taiwan, stop selling arms to Taiwan and do more that is conducive
to the overall interests of China-US relations and the peaceful development of
the cross-Straits relations, instead of the other way around.
Q: The UN General
Assembly on Thursday endorsed a resolution urging the Security Council to take
the issue of DPRK’s human rights to the International Criminal Court. There
will be discussions on relevant issue at the Security Council next week. Will
A: The Chinese side always maintains that differences in the field of human rights should be resolved through constructive dialogue and cooperation between countries. We are opposed to the act of politicizing the human rights issue or exerting pressure on others under the pretext of human rights. The Security Council is not a proper venue to discuss the human rights issue. To bring the issue to the International Criminal Court will not help solve the problem. |
