The translator’s notes: On July 7, 1939, when Mao Zedong gave a speech to students at the Northern Shanxi Public School in Yan’ an, he mentioned a poem written by Jiang Yan (444-505), a writer of the Liang Period of South Dynasty (502-557) in Chinese history. His change of two lines resulted in this poem. |
