A Verse with Eight Five-Character Lines

An Elegy to General Dai Annan

Autumn 1942

Standing in need of soldiers to bulwark against alien aggression,

Chanting the Plucking Roses, a general set off on expedition.

With his newly mechanized division

He fought bravely and brought the tiger and bear under subjugation.

Bathing in blood in defense of Toungoo,

The soldiers returned by way of Tang-gyi after expelling the Woes in desperation.

He even sacrificed his life on the battle ground,

And eventually realized his lofty aspiration.
