三上北高峰，¹

杭州一望空。

飞凤亭边树，²

桃花岭上风。³

热来寻扇子，

冷去对佳人。⁴

A Verse with Eight Five-Character Lines

Watching the Mountain

1955

Three times I ascended the North Crest,¹

And watched over Hangzhou at its best.

Beside the Winging – Phoenix Arbour the trees stand,²

And over the Peach – Blossom Ridge the breezes waft.³

I sought the fan when it was hot,

And I visited the fair when there was frost.⁴

The leaves drifted downwards,

And the vesper oriole greeted us at the site.

¹ The North Crest is on the west of the West Lake in Hangzhou, from the top of which you can see all the scenes of Hangzhou

² The Winging – Phoenix Arbour refers to the Phoenix – Coming Arbour on the Gem Mountain on the north bank of the West Lake, which is one of the ten scenic sites of the West Lake.

³ The Peach – Blossom Ridge is a mount near the North Crest.

⁴ The Fair should be the Beauty Crest on the south of the North Crest.
