It’s with a sense of great pride
and humility and renewed optimism that I welcome you to the closing plenary of
the global summit after what has been a remarkable three-days, all dynamic and
often inspiring activity. I think we can be pleased with what we have achieved
in that time of how together we have opened the eyes of the world to this issue
and agreed some vital, practical steps which must now be implemented to make a
real difference on the ground. I think we’ve all been impressed by the
commitment, the bravery, the dedication of survivors, activists and leaders,
many of whom have worked on these issues for years without the global support
they deserve and whose efforts are a constant source of inspiration. And in
particular, I want to thank all those organizations, individuals and activists
who’ve been working in the fringe, which has been remarkable and making it a
resounding success. And I am optimistic because I know the passion and the political
will that has been demonstrated here has the potential to make an enormous difference
for years to come, provided we follow it up. So as well as looking back this
morning, I hope we can also look ahead to what we will do in the future to
sustain the momentum that we’ve built for the long term and decisively turned
the tide on this issue. |
