American jazz pianist Bill Evans once said, “Jazz is not a what, it is a how.” On this International Jazz Day, we therefore celebrate more than a musical art: we celebrate a way of being together.

Indeed, the art of Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and many others is rooted in a humanistic commitment to saying no to racism and injustice.
From the backyards of musicians to the popular clubs of metropolitan cities, jazz makes us look beyond the notes and see one another as equal human beings. It allows us to look at our relationship to the world and to each other, while celebrating our diversity and differences.
This is also the core of UNESCO’s mandate – and that is why, since 2012, we celebrate International Jazz Day every year on 30 April.
For the past two years, this day has taken on added importance. The pandemic has had a major impact on the music industry and especially music like jazz, which is so deeply rooted in improvisation, in live performance.
In fact, the consequences of the pandemic have been felt throughout the culture sector as a whole, worsening the situation of authors and creators, which was fragile even before the pandemic.
This day is therefore an opportunity to reflect on the role of artists and culture in our societies. UNESCO’s report Reshaping Policies for Creativity, published in February, makes a number of thought-provoking proposals in this regard. For example, it recommends public policies that support much stronger economic and social protection for cultural professionals, and the fairer distribution of revenues from online platforms.
This day is also an opportunity to pay tribute to all creators for the joy and emotions they bring us, and to echo the universal message of jazz musicians. In this spirit, we are delighted to once again be able to count on the commitment of our official Jazz Day partner, the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. Through performances, but also through educational tools and outreach programmes, we are reaching young and old and promoting the messages of jazz that engender respect, hope and community.
As we work to build a more united and inclusive world, we can look to jazz for inspiration. Jazz is the story of many, across borders and cultures. In the words of the Queen of Jazz, Ella Fitzgerald, “Where there is love and inspiration, I don’t think you can go wrong.”
