Documentary heritage, including audiovisual heritage, bears witness to this memory – the unfolding of human thought and events; the evolution of languages, cultures, peoples. It allows us to observe events we did not participate in, listen to sounds from long ago, and visit places that no longer exist.
Today, this heritage is an essential source of information – a reservoir of knowledge that encourages inter-cultural dialogue and understanding, and therefore fosters peace.
We see this, for example, in the powerful and poignant message of love, hope and kindness in the face of cruelty, conveyed in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. We see it in the passionate plea for social justice immortalized in Los olvidados, a film by Luis Buñuel.
That is why, every year on 27 October, we celebrate the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage – to ensure that this heritage, which can be especially fragile, is protected in memory institutions worldwide, to make it readily available to all, and to promote its use and re-use as a fundamental freedom.
Over the past three decades, the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme has worked towards these goals by galvanizing international cooperation. With nearly 500 inscriptions – including 64 in 2023 – the Memory of the World International Register ensures items of global significance can be accessed by both current and future generations, while supporting research, education, and preservation efforts.
On this day, therefore, UNESCO reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding documentary heritage as a catalyst for dialogue and peace. For preserving our heritage means preserving our memory – and we cannot build a sustainable future without remembering our past.
