Linjiangxian
Yan Jidao
Every time I wake up from a dream,
The whole place, without her, looks forlorn.
Each time I sober up from a drink,
The curtains seem to be closely drawn.
Since last spring, about now, she was gone.
I’ve had many things for which to mourn.:
Falling flowers suggest my lonely state;
So would a swallow flying with its mate.
When I first saw Xiaoping,
She was in a gauzy dress, silk-lined,
With two embroidered birds, well-designed.
She could make her lute sing –
The love from a maiden’s heart,
Ere she would care to depart.
The bright moon was then o’er the sky’s dome,
Illuming Xiaoping’s way to her home.

When from my dream I awake,
Towers and terraces are locked as wont.
When drunkenness abates,
Curtains are down to cheer my loneliness.
Last year’s spring sorrow repeats this year’s ail.
Amid the falling flowers alone I stand,
In the fine drizzle swallows fly in pair.
I remember when Xiao Ping and I first met,
We exchanged silken wears by heart-incense perfumed.
The old lute of love’s new woe tells.
Now shines the selfsame moon that once illumed
The colourful cloud’s homeward way.

Awaking from a dream in the locked pavilion,
I sober up to see the curtain hanging low.
Last spring’s grief again assails me.
Amidst the falling flowers she stood alone;
While in the light drizzle, pairs of swallows played.
I recall my first encounter with Xiao Pin*;
She wore a light silk dress, embroidered with two hearts.
The music of her lute expressed her tender feelings.
Though the bright moon still shines,
The same moon which sent away the rosy cloud.
*This was the name of a singsong girl.

Returning like a Radiant Cloud
(To the Tune of Linjiangxian)
Yan Jidao
Walking with a hangover, I look up
to see the high balcony door
locked, the curtain
hung low. Last spring,
the sorrow of separation new,
long, long I stood,
alone,
amidst all the falling petals;
A pair of swallows fluttered
in the drizzle.
I still remember how
Xiao Ping appeared the first time,
in her silken clothes embroidered
with a double character of heart,
pouring out her passion
on the strings of a Pipa.
The bright moon illuminated her returning
like a radiant cloud.

Riverside Daffodils
Yan Jidao
Awake from dreams, I find the locked tower high;
Sober from wine, I see the curtain hanging low.
As last year spring grief seems to grow.
Amid the falling blooms alone stand I;
I the fine rain a pair of swallows fly.
I still remember when I first saw pretty Ping,
I silken dress embroidered with two hearts in a ring,
Revealing lovesickness by touching pipa’s string.
The moon shines bright just as last year;
It did see her like a cloud disappear.

Immortals over the River
Yan Jidao
I wake up from dreams to find the tower lock’d;
When I’m sobered up, the curtains hang low there.
Last year at the elapse of spring I was shock’d:
Th’ petals falling down, I stood alone in despair,
And pairs of swallows darted through th’ drizzle in th’ air.
Still fresh in my mind is how I first met Xiao Pin.
Whose silk blouse embroider’d with two hearts I did sight.
She express’d her love by plucking pipa from string
To string. At the time the moon was shinning bright,
Which in th’ end for the Rosy Cloud* the way did light.
*The Rosy Cloud is a pun referring to the rosy cloud as well as to the girl Xiao Pin.

To the Tune Fairy Upon the River
Yan Jidao
Awake from dream, disappointed, I find
Pavilion and tower locked up high.
When drunk’ness does abate I see
But curtains down in shade so bleak.
That springtime grief of the previous year
Returns to me with the season and the scene.
While lonely I stand ’mid flowers drifting,
In pairs the swallow hover, it drizzling.
I remember my first encounter with her,
Xiaoping by name, so few her words.
She wore a slender silken dress
With double hearts embroidered abreast.
Her touches on strings were never failing
To tell in music of tender feelings.
The moon at the full then sees here away
– A rosy cloud afloat, so fair.

Immortals Near the River
Yan Jidao
After the dream, high stairs locked on,
Awake from a drunken sleep, the curtains roll down.
Last year’s spring melancholy comes along.
Flowers fall on the way as one is lonely,
Double swallows in swift drizzle fly freely.
At first, I met you, my little maiden,
You wore a silk dress, our hearts fast beat.
Lovesickness was what your pipa strings mean.
At that time,
The bright moon shone with a look at my beautiful cloud to go back.
