The Fifth Night of the First Month
Zhu Shuzhen
I
The cleansed sunny sky, the fenced moon, and the caged spring,
The thick and heavy curtains, and clear pipes and strings,
A succession of luxurious halls for immortals,
Lost emeralds and pearls all over the capital,
Mixed with drums and pipes were hilarious laughs in ease;
All streets were lit brightly in celebration of peace.
It’s the third of fourth watch, Royal Clock, when I came home.
Plum blooms’ thin shadow did across my window roam.
其二
压尘小雨润生寒,云影澄鲜月正圆。
十里绮罗春富贵,千门灯火夜婵娟。
香街宝马嘶琼辔,辇路轻舆响翠軿。
高挂危帘凝望处,分明星斗下晴天。
II
The dust-setting drizzle brings us moisture and chill;
The shadow of cloud is cleansed, and the moon just bright.
The thriving spring’s shown in ten-mile stain and silk.
Thousand-household lights sparkle with the moon at night.
On fragrant streets, fair horses neigh with bridles of jade;
On royal roads, light carts creak with green-curtain ones.
I roll up the curtain, gaze at a distance place,
And sees stars come down to the ground on this fine day.

其三
火树银花触目红,揭天鼓吹暖春风。
新欢入手愁忙里,旧时惊心忆梦中。
但愿暂成人缱绻,不妨常任月朦胧。
赏灯哪得工夫醉,未必明年此会同。
III
Fiery candles and silvery flowers redden our eyes;
Drums and pipes, teasing the spring wind, are loud to sky.
New pleasure’s held in hands, but woe’s busy inside;
The past events startle their hearts that in dreams fly.
They get their wish to have a temporary date,
And they might as well wish the moon would shine in haze.
They indulge in their arms, ignoring the lanterns’ charms,
Because this day next year is in an unknown maze.

On the Night of the First Full Moon
Zhu Shuzhen
Fireworks burn bright in the sky,
Drumbeats shake the spring air.
Meeting at this hour of sorrow is ecstasy,
Though what has been still haunts our dreams.
Oh, if only we could be happy, now here.
Under this full moon,
Even the moon will soon be overcast
Night after night.
But how can we just watch the lantern show,
And not drink to our heart’s content,
Knowing we may not meet again here next year?
