Well, this has been a really inspiring trip to Africa. I visited South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya. I’ve met African leaders, businesses, members of the local community. But actually, what struck me most about this trip is the young people that I’ve met.

My first visit was to a school in South Africa – hugely inspiring young children there. I’ve met young entrepreneurs in Nigeria. I’ve met boy and girl Scouts and Guides here in Kenya. And what has come through is the huge enthusiasm of the young people, the huge potential that there is here across the whole of Africa for the future and their ambition for a greater future for Africa.

And I want the UK to be part of the partnership that helps to deliver on that future. And that’s about the sort of work we can do by investing, bringing businesses into Africa. I want the UK to be the G7’s biggest investor in Africa by 2022. Businesses [are] creating jobs for the future because with this huge young population, those jobs are so important. But also, we are working as the UK to help to give those young people the skills that they need to be able to take up those jobs of the future.

And of course, stability, security is also an important part of this. The security and defence partnerships that we’re forging, the work that we’re doing to deal with terrorism, to deal with the crime. Our law enforcement agencies operating together, and of course, dealing with the terrible crime of human trafficking and modern slavery. And I was deeply moved by two young women in Nigeria who spoke to me about their experience very bravely, spoke to me about their experience. This is a terrible scourge on humanity – modern slavery – we must stamp it out, the UK is at the forefront of doing it.

But above all, I’ve been inspired by my trip to Africa. I think there is huge potential. I see a continent, that is a continent that is full of young people with ambition for the future. The UK wants to be part of helping them achieve their ambition.
