At the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a commitment to ensure that “no one is left behind”. Today, as in the past, the control of knowledge leads to inequality, exclusion and social conflict. As our planet faces a rising number of challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss and natural disasters, the development of scientific knowledge is more important than ever. To rise to these challenges, we need to increase investment in science, research and technology, especially with a view to developing innovative ideas.

The global nature of these issues calls for a global response – one that involves all members of all societies around the world. This inclusive approach is central to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. Participation is also a key characteristic of science itself, where the inclusion of multiple disciplines in problem solving and the dissemination of research helps generate new knowledge.

Open Science seeks to make scientific information, knowledge and data available to all. By increasing access to information, it aims to give all scientists, innovators, engineers, entrepreneurs and citizens the opportunity to observe, contribute and create knowledge in the fields of science, technology and innovation. Not only does this approach boost transparency and accountability, it helps create equal opportunities for all, by encouraging engagement with scientific culture. To call attention to these goals, UNESCO has chosen the theme “Open Science, leaving no one behind” for this year’s World Science Day for Peace and Development.

UNESCO is ready to take the lead in this global dialogue to ensure that Open Science lives up to its potential. At the international level, Open Science can contribute to closing science, technology and innovation gaps, ensuring that scientific and technological progress benefits all and leaves no one behind.
