《菜根谭》英译（相观对治、方便法门）

人之际遇，有齐有不齐，而能使己独齐乎？己之情理，有顺有不顺，而能使人皆顺乎？以此相观对治，亦是一方便法门。<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Every man has his own life experiences. With some, it is always plain sailing, while others encounter many hardships and failures. How can a person ensure that he alone will always be successful? Every man feels differently at different times. How can one expect others to be always in a good mood? This reasoning can be regarded as a convenient method for enlightening people.

Men’s lots are different from each other. Among them, some are commendable, and some are not. How can a men claim that he himself is the only one whose lot is commendable? The state of a man’s mind changes accordingly from time to time. Now he may be sensible, now may not. How can he demand that others hold on to a sensible state of mind without any change? Conduct mutual examination and contrast others’ position with our own, and thus we find out a way fit for refining our moral behaviors.
